Here are our top 5 favorite hikes that can all be done in less than 2 hours! As with all these hikes, we recommend early morning or late afternoon and you will be able to soak in all the gorgeous golden hues of Tuscany plus be far more comfortable than a mid-day hike in the sun.
1. Pienza Circular Route
Duration: 1.5 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Difficulty: Easy
Starting Point: Pienza town center (Piazza Pio II)
This hike is a great introduction hike to Val D’orcia’s landscape.
Key Features:
– Well-marked trail with clear signage – this is key!
– Gentle terrain – nothing too strenuous and perfect for families
– Panoramic views of the Val D’orcia, including distant views of Monticchiello and Montepulciano
– Passes through olive groves and wheat fields
Points of Interest:
– Podere Vignone: A picturesque farmhouse of Tuscan rural architecture
– Pieve di Corsignano: An 11th-century Romanesque church located just outside Pienza
2. Bagno Vignoni Loop
Duration: 2 hours
Distance: Approximately 7 km
Difficulty: Moderate
Starting Point: Bagno Vignoni main square
There is no other town in Italy like Bagno Vignoni and this hike makes a loop from its main piazza. 
Key Features:
– Another well-marked trail but this one has some minor hills
– Diverse landscape ranging from woodlands to open fields (you may be able to catch some shade)
– Lots of wonderful foliage and flowers
Points of Interest:
– Parco dei Mulini: Ancient mills that once utilized the thermal waters where you can take a dip below
– Vignoni Alto: A small medieval borgo offering panoramic views
– Natural thermal springs alongside parts of the trail
3. Monticchiello Vista Trail
Duration: 1.5 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Starting Point: Monticchiello town gate
This trail showcases some of the most iconic views in the Val D’orcia.
Key Features:
– Well-marked circular route
– Moderate elevation changes offering panoramic vistas
– Passes through classic Tuscan countryside including vineyards and olive groves
– Excellent photo opps
The trail begins and ends in the charming village of Monticchiello, following a mix of gravel paths and minor paved roads. While mostly easy, there are some short uphill sections that may require a moderate level of fitness.

– Views of Pienza and Montepulciano in the distance

This is a gentle trail and lovely hike to start off your day.

– Well-marked, mostly flat trail
